The Labour Party (LP) has formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of its approved timetable for the conduct of its 2026 elective congresses and National Convention, signaling the commencement of a critical phase in the party’s internal democratic process across Nigeria.
In a formal communication dated March 31, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of INEC at the Commission’s headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, the party’s national leadership conveyed its readiness to proceed with the nationwide exercise in compliance with relevant electoral laws and constitutional provisions.
The notification, signed by the Caretaker National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Esther Usman, and the Caretaker National Secretary, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, outlined that the exercise will cover ward, local government, and state congresses, culminating in a National Convention where members of the National Executive Committee will be elected.
According to the party, the notification aligns with the requirements of Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), the regulations and guidelines issued by INEC for political parties, as well as Sections 223(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), all of which mandate political parties to duly inform the electoral body of such activities.
The Labour Party further recalled that it had earlier communicated a postponement of its previously scheduled congresses and convention. The delay, it explained, was necessary to ensure broader participation of party members nationwide, particularly to allow for the completion of its ongoing digital membership registration process.
With the new timetable now approved, the party has fixed April 23, 2026, for the conduct of Ward Congresses across all ward headquarters nationwide, where officers of the ward executive committees will be elected.
This will be followed by the Local Government Area (LGA) Congresses on April 24, 2026, to be held at designated party offices across the 774 local government areas of the federation for the election of LGA executive officers.
Subsequently, State Congresses are scheduled for April 25, 2026, across the 36 state capitals and the Federal Capital Territory, where state executive officers of the party will emerge.
The sequence of congresses will culminate in the Labour Party National Convention slated for April 28, 2026, at the International Conference Center in Umuahia, Abia State. The convention will serve as the platform for electing members of the party’s National Executive.
All the listed activities are scheduled to commence at 12 noon at their respective venues nationwide.
The party also called on INEC to acknowledge receipt of the notification and to communicate the development to its state offices to ensure effective monitoring of the congresses and convention in line with its constitutional mandate.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles, the Labour Party emphasized its dedication to strengthening internal democracy and contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s democratic development through transparent an
d inclusive processes.
