Labour Party Postpones Ward, LG, State Congresses and National Convention; Sets Up 45-Member Planning Committee
The Labour Party has announced the postponement of its scheduled ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as its national convention, which were earlier slated to commence on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
According to the party’s previously released timetable, the ward congresses were to hold on March 26, followed by local government congresses on March 28, state congresses on March 31, and the national convention on April 11, 2026.
However, the party has now resolved to shift the entire exercise.
The decision was reached after a combined stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the Interim National Working Committee (NWC) and representatives of labour unions. The postponement, the party explained, is intended to allow sufficient time for members and prospective Nigerians to fully participate in the ongoing membership re-registration exercise.
In a move to ensure a smooth and credible process ahead of the rescheduled activities, the party has inaugurated a 45-member Congresses and Convention Committee. The committee is chaired by Rep. Ginger Onwusibe, who represents Isiala Ngwa North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Other members of the committee include Comrade Salisu N. Mohammed, Rep. Obinna Aguocha, Rep. Amaobi Ogah, Rep. Ibe Okwara, Rep. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Rep. Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Hon. Benedict Etanabene, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ihuoma Emeruwa, Comrade Lawson Osagie, and Mrs. Imaobong Ufot, among others.
While inaugurating the committee, the National Chairman of the party, Senator Nenadi Usman, tasked members with carrying out their duties with diligence, impartiality, and a strong sense of commitment. She emphasized the importance of utilizing the postponement period to finalize all necessary arrangements that would guarantee hitch-free congresses and a successful national convention.
The party also appealed to its members, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and its supporters across the country to show understanding over the adjustment. It assured stakeholders that a new timetable for the congresses and convention would be communicated in due course.
The development signals the party’s effort to strengthen internal processes and broaden participation as it prepares for its upcoming internal democratic exercises.
