While addressing the good people of Abia state, and the entire media audience who usually participate during the monthly media chat of the Abia state Governor, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, tagged “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians”‘; a very lively and no hold bounds interactive media session with the Governor, anchored by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, His Excellency, the Governor, Dr Alex Otti announced the commencement of the commercialisation of the electric bus services in the state.
It could be recalled that the first batch of 20 Abia Electric Bus Services, known as the Green Shuttles
were officially commissioned by the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Mrs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, at the invitation of the Governor, on December 22nd 2025, and the buses commenced free services immediately.
For two solid months and few days, the buses have served Abians very well with a record of thousands of residents benefiting from it. In fact, available statistics show that between the 24th of December and the 29th of January, the scheme operated for 497 bus days and transported a total of 106,116 passengers over a total distance of 74,796.6 kilometres. Within the period under review, it was recorded that, on the average, 14 buses were deployed daily, and each carried approximately 3,034 passengers daily.
Having completed the pilot stage of test running the electric bus services, from December 22nd to February 28 2026, the Green Shuttles have now been directed by the state government to commence subsidised commercial services with a token fare.
According to the press release by the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Sir Prince Okey Kanu, the commencement of the subsidised transport services is also being done digitally, without payment of cash for boarding the vehicle.
The Commissioner in the release, announced commencement of the full rollout of the Abia Connect Card, being the official cashless payment system for the Green Shuttle Bus Service. He noted that the digital process of payment and running of the transportation system is part of the deliberate efforts of the administration of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, to modernise public transportation and deliver a seamless commuting experience to the people of the state.
According to the Commissioner, “The transition to the Abia Connect Card also known as the “Abia State Card”, eliminates the inconveniences associated with cash payments, including delays, disputes over change, and revenue leakages.
“With this innovation, commuters now enjoy a fast, secure, and stress-free boarding experience powered by a simple tap system.
“We are intentionally moving away from the hassles of cash transactions. With the Abia Connect Card, commuting becomes as simple as a single tap. It is efficient, reliable, and designed to ensure that our public transport system works effectively for everyone,” Prince Kanu stated.
Emphasising on the subsidised and digital transportation, Governor Alex Otti himself noted that “it’s going to be cheap. You need to be organised in such a way that cash will not be accepted. So you have to pay with card.
“We need to just begin to move up the ladder. Digital transformation, that’s where the world has gone. We can’t be different,” Governor Otti stressed.
It is imperative to note that, in order to ensure a seamless transition, the process for obtaining and using the card has been simplified for all. First of all, the first card is currently free of charge for all citizens. And residents can obtain their cards at designated Green Shuttle terminals and authorised agent locations across Aba and Umuahia.
For Aba, the designated Green Shuttle terminals are as follows; one, Osisioma to Park Route: comprising Osisioma Junction, Zonal Board Bus Stop, Bata Bus Stop, and Main Park. Two, Opopo Junction to Park Route consisting of Opopo Junction & Main Park, while Park to Flyover Route: include; Main Park, Uratta Junction Bus Stop, Ohabiam Bus Stop and Flyover Junction. Lastly, the Flyover to Osisioma Route: include
Flyover Junction (Alaojii), Tonimas Junction and Osisioma Junction.
For Umuahia, Ubakala to Isigate Route: covers Ubakala, Isigate by the Central Bus Terminal. Then Isigate to Tower Route comprises Isigate and Tower. The 3rd route in Umuahia is Isigate to Secretariat/JAAC Building Route, covering Isigate, Secretariat as well as JAAC Building., while Isigate to Ohafia Route, covers Isigate and Ohafia.
These People With Disabilities (PWD) complaint electric buses are very cheap as it has a flat rate of 150 Naira of all the intra – city services and 800 Naira for all inter – city travellings.
This simple means that, those shuttling within Aba or Umuahia towns, whether it is from
Ubakala to Isi Gate (Central Bus Terminal), Isi Gate (Central Bus Terminal) to Tower or
Isi Gate (Central Bus Terminal) to Secretariat and JAAC Building all in Umuahia, it is 150 Naira. Also, those who shuttle within Aba. Be it Osisioma to Main Park Route, Opopo Junction to Main Park Route or Main Park to Flyover (Alaojii) Route among others would cost only the flat rate of 150 Naira.
while those who travel from Aba to Umuahia or Umuahia to Aba would pay 800 Naira only, and Umuahia to Ohafia or Ohafia to Umuahia would pay 1,000 Naira only.
The only condition or qualification for using the Green Shuttles is for the prospective user must present his ABSSIN to receive the card. This ABSSIN registration which has been on for a long time can be self generated by visiting the Abia Pay website at https://abiapay.com/create-abssin to register and obtain the number.
It is instructive to note that, after funding the Abia Connect Card, subject to a minimal ₦50 top-up charge, commuters are required to tap the card on the payment device upon boarding the Green Shuttle. A confirmation of welcome sound would validate successful payment. Importantly too, the card does not expire, and funds loaded onto it remain valid without time limitation.
Indeed, the objective of the Abia state government in introducing this new transport remains clear, and that is to make Abia State’s transport system a model of innovation, efficiency, and transparency in Nigeria.
Abians and residents are therefore enjoined to take full advantage of the ongoing free card distribution to obtain their Abia Connect Card, and ensure that money is deposited into it to enable them board the Green shuttles at will and enjoy the ride continually.
Of course embracing the Abia Connect Card, residents are not only paying for transportation but also supporting a structured, accountable, and technology-driven public transport system initiative by the visionary Governor of Abia state.
Truly, this transformative journey towards a smarter Abia is worth supporting by all and sundry, as it heralds an era of revolutionalised urban mobility, a transformation that would even further reduce the cost of transportation across the state.
It would further boost the rate of Abia in terms of cost of transportation, as the state had not too long ago emerged the best in terms of public transportation cost. Let everyone support the visionary Governor of Abia State Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR in achieving his new Abia agenda.
