Nigerian-American Ugo Ugochukwu Makes History as First American to Win FIA Formula 3 Championship
Nigerian-American racing sensation Ugo Ugochukwu has etched his name into motorsport history after being crowned the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Champion, following a dramatic season-ending race in Madrid, Spain.
The 19-year-old secured the prestigious championship on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at the newly built Madring circuit, finishing second in the Feature Race for Campos Racing and becoming the first driver representing the United States to win the FIA Formula 3 title.
Ugochukwu entered the decisive final race locked in a fierce championship battle with British driver Freddie Slater, with the title ultimately going down to the final laps of the season.
Finland’s Tuukka Taponen claimed victory in the Madrid Feature Race, but Ugochukwu’s runner-up finish proved sufficient to seal the championship. Slater could only manage eighth place, allowing Ugochukwu to finish the season 14 points clear at the top of the standings.
The triumph capped a remarkable campaign for the young driver, who demonstrated consistency, speed and composure throughout one of the most competitive seasons in the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
Who Is Ugo Ugochukwu?
Born in New York, Ugochukwu has Nigerian-American heritage and has emerged as one of the most promising young talents in international motorsport. He is of Anambra State origin through his Nigerian mother, supermodel Oluchi Onweagba.
He has progressed through the highly competitive junior single-seater racing system with ambitions of eventually reaching Formula 1, the pinnacle of global motorsport.
Ugochukwu was previously part of the McLaren Driver Development Programme, where he was identified as a potential future star and given support in his progression through the junior categories.
For the 2026 season, he competed in FIA Formula 3 with Campos Racing, producing a series of standout performances that ultimately propelled him to the championship.
A Breakthrough Season:
Ugochukwu made an immediate statement at the beginning of the campaign when he secured his maiden FIA Formula 3 victory in the Melbourne Feature Race in March.
He followed that success with another impressive triumph at Silverstone, where he dominated the Sprint Race and crossed the finish line a remarkable 17 seconds ahead of the field.
Those victories established him as a genuine championship contender and set the stage for an increasingly intense battle with Slater.
Championship Battle Goes Down to the Wire:
Despite his strong start, Ugochukwu’s road to the championship was far from straightforward.
Slater seized control of the title race following the Budapest round in July. The British driver defeated Ugochukwu in the Feature Race and opened an eight-point championship advantage heading into the summer break.
The pressure intensified heading into the final weekend in Madrid, with Slater holding a 15-point advantage over Ugochukwu before the decisive round.
However, Ugochukwu responded in spectacular fashion.
His strong qualifying performance placed him in a favourable position for the finale, while Slater encountered difficulties during the opening session. The momentum of the championship began to swing dramatically in Ugochukwu’s direction.
He then delivered under immense pressure in the Feature Race, securing second place behind Taponen. Slater’s eighth-place finish meant the points were enough for Ugochukwu to overturn the deficit and claim the championship.
A Historic American Achievement:
Ugochukwu’s triumph carries particular significance for American motorsport.
By winning the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Championship, he became the first American champion in the history of the series, marking a major milestone for the United States on the international single-seater racing scene.
His achievement also places him among a group of Formula 3 champions who have gone on to compete at the highest level, including Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto.
While Formula 3 is an important stepping stone toward Formula 2 and ultimately Formula 1, Ugochukwu’s championship victory does not guarantee an F1 seat.
However, it significantly strengthens his credentials as he continues his progression through the motorsport ladder.
At just 19 years old, the Nigerian-American has now added an FIA Formula 3 championship to his growing résumé.
