Peter Obi Honoured with Georgia State Citizenship After High-Level Engagements at Black Congressional Week in Washington

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, was on Thursday, September 25, conferred with Honorary Citizenship of the State of Georgia, USA. The recognition came after his active participation in a series of engagements marking Black Congressional Week in Washington, D.C., with Georgia State playing a central role.

Obi’s itinerary was packed with strategic meetings and forums that underscored his growing international profile as a voice for democracy, governance, and sustainable development in Africa.

He joined U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock at the Congressional Black Caucus Week Reception in the historic Senate Kennedy Caucus Room. Discussions during the session revolved around strengthening democratic institutions in Africa, promoting stability, and advancing economic opportunities for the continent.

Beyond politics, Obi delved into energy and development partnerships in a meeting with Ms. Kim Clark, Chief Executive Officer of Georgia Power, one of America’s largest electricity providers generating over 20,000 megawatts nationwide. The exchange emphasized the critical role of reliable energy infrastructure in unlocking Africa’s economic potential and attracting investment.

At the One Voice Africa forum, a platform dedicated to promoting the dignity and welfare of Black immigrants, Obi called for stronger advocacy for good governance and responsible leadership across Africa. He underscored the continent’s untapped potential and stressed that visionary leadership remains the missing link in transforming Africa into a global force.

The day’s engagements culminated in a symbolic milestone as the State of Georgia formally conferred Honorary Citizenship on Obi.
