Sagamu Court Grants ₦5 Million Bail to Driver in Fatal Anthony Joshua SUV Crash, Sets January 20 Trial Date
A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has granted bail to Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of the Lexus sports utility vehicle involved in the fatal road crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
Kayode was arraigned on Friday by the Nigeria Police on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence. Following his arraignment, the court admitted him to bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties.
Pending the fulfillment of the bail conditions, the defendant was ordered to be remanded at a correctional facility. The court also adjourned the matter to January 20, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Command disclosed that Kayode, a 46-year-old male, was formally charged before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on January 2, 2026, in connection with the accident involving the Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua.
The tragic incident occurred last Monday around the Sinoma area near Sagamu, when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and two of his associates collided with a stationary truck while travelling from Lagos to Sagamu. Although the former boxing champion survived the crash with minor injuries, two of his close aides lost their lives.
The deceased were identified as Kevin Latif Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach. Both men were said to be key members of Joshua’s professional team.
Preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps attributed the accident to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.
However, the Ogun State Police Command later stated that a tyre burst was responsible for the crash.
Anthony Joshua was initially taken to Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he received medical treatment for his injuries. He was subsequently discharged on Wednesday, after which the driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged to court.
The case has continued to attract public attention due to Joshua’s global profile and the tragic loss of two members of his inner circle, as legal proceedings now move toward trial later in January.
