In a decisive move signaling the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s military leadership, the Senate on Wednesday officially confirmed General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff.

General Oluyede’s confirmation followed a brief but comprehensive screening exercise held at the National Assembly complex, Abuja. He was among the group of newly appointed service chiefs who appeared before the Senate for evaluation earlier in the day.

Arriving at the National Assembly around 10 a.m., Oluyede and his colleagues were accompanied by top-ranking senior military officers, drawing attention from lawmakers, journalists, and security personnel. The screening exercise, which took place under tight security, lasted less than an hour before the Senate unanimously cleared the nominee.

His confirmation marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s defence hierarchy, as General Oluyede is expected to lead the nation’s armed forces in tackling the growing challenges of insecurity across the country from terrorism and banditry to emerging cyber and maritime threats.

While details of the session remain confidential, sources within the National Assembly hinted that the Senate commended Oluyede’s extensive experience, strategic acumen, and record of service in both domestic and international military operations.

General Oluyede now takes over the leadership of the Armed Forces at a critical time, as Nigerians look forward to renewed military professionalism, inter-agency coordination, and improved national security under his command.

More details on the confirmation and the service chiefs’ appointments are expected in subsequent reports.
