Abia State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of a United States–based Nigerian physician, Dr. Uzoma Nwaubani, who was in the state as part of a humanitarian medical outreach.

Dr. Nwaubani, a member of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA), reportedly passed on after a brief illness while actively participating in the ongoing ANPA Medical Mission in Abia State, a programme delivering free healthcare services to residents.

According to an official statement issued by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, on Friday, the late medical expert had traveled from the United States alongside her husband and daughter, a final-year medical student, to volunteer her professional expertise for the benefit of citizens of the state.

The Governor described her death as shocking and deeply painful, noting that her selfless service and commitment to humanity distinguished her as an exceptional and compassionate professional.

“She returned home to serve her people at no cost, a sacrifice that speaks volumes of her character,” the statement read.

Dr. Nwaubani was said to have developed a sudden medical emergency during the mission and was immediately rushed to a medical facility, where a combined team of ANPA and local healthcare professionals made concerted efforts to save her life. Despite what the government described as “gallant efforts” by the highly skilled team, she could not be revived.

Governor Otti extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the ANPA community, and all those affected by the tragic loss. He disclosed that the state government is in active communication with both the family and the leadership of ANPA to provide necessary support during this difficult time.

The Governor also commended the courage of Dr. Nwaubani’s family and the ANPA team for choosing to continue the medical mission despite the devastating incident, describing the decision as a testament to their dedication and resilience.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to healthcare delivery, Governor Otti emphasized that the Abia State Government remains resolute in prioritizing the well-being of both residents and visitors.

“This loss is painful, but her legacy of service will not be forgotten,” he noted.

He concluded with prayers for the repose of her soul and strength for her grieving family, urging the public to remember her for her sacrifice and unwavering dedication to saving lives.
