U.S to Closely Monitor Nigeria’s 2027 General Elections, Says Congressman Riley Moore
The administration of United States President Donald Trump will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, as Washington signals growing interest in the credibility, transparency, and conduct of the country’s next electoral process.
This was disclosed by U.S Congressman Riley Moore, a Republican representing West Virginia, during an interview with NoireTV published on the platform’s social media pages on Sunday.
Responding to questions on Nigeria’s forthcoming general elections and the role the United States could play in supporting credible democratic processes, Moore said the elections would be under close observation by both himself and the Trump administration.
“What I’d say is that we’re certainly going to be watching these results and how these elections unfold and how they’re executed. And that’s something that myself and the administration are going to be paying very close attention to.”
The remarks underscore the importance Washington places on Nigeria’s democratic process, with the conduct of the 2027 elections expected to attract significant international attention as Africa’s most populous nation prepares for another transition through the ballot.
Beyond the elections, Moore also revealed that the U.S House of Representatives is currently considering an appropriations bill that includes provisions relating to Nigeria, particularly in the areas of religious freedom and US security assistance.
Speaking on the proposed legislation, the congressman highlighted ongoing efforts surrounding a bill sponsored by fellow lawmaker Chris Smith, of which he is a co-sponsor.
“We’re working on Chris (Smith)’s bill, which obviously I’m a co-sponsor of that bill. But I’d say, more importantly, what people need to pay attention to is the appropriations bill that we’re going to have on the floor today,” Moore said.
According to the lawmaker, the proposed appropriations bill contains “pretty strong and aggressive language” concerning Nigeria’s relationship with the United States, particularly on issues relating to religious freedom and security cooperation.
The development comes as political activities ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum, with international stakeholders increasingly expressing interest in the country’s democratic process and governance.
