World Cup Glory Doesn’t Automatically Make Lamine Yamal the GOAT; Messi’s Throne Remains Intact

The football world never fails to overreact. The moment Spain lifted the FIFA World Cup and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal celebrated with the trophy, social media exploded with one familiar question: Has Lamine officially overtaken Lionel Messi as the Greatest of All Time?

My answer is simple: No. Not even close. This isn’t an attempt to diminish the brilliance of Lamine Yamal. Far from it. The youngster is arguably the most gifted footballer of his generation. His composure, vision, creativity, and maturity at such a young age are astonishing. Winning both the European Championship and the FIFA World Cup before turning 20 is a feat many legends never achieved. But football history is not written in moments alone. It is written across years of relentless excellence.

The GOAT debate has never been about who had the hottest season or won the latest major trophy. It is about sustained dominance over an entire career.

Lionel Messi didn’t become the GOAT because he won one World Cup. He earned that status after nearly two decades of rewriting football history. Eight Ballon d’Or awards. Multiple UEFA Champions League titles. League championships in different countries. Copa América triumphs. Hundreds of assists. Hundreds of goals. Records that once seemed impossible became routine under Messi.

Above all, he maintained an extraordinary level of performance year after year, regardless of the competition, the pressure, or the stage. That is what separates greatness from legendary immortality.

Lamine Yamal may well be on the path to challenging that legacy. If he continues winning major trophies, dominates European football for the next decade, collects multiple Ballon d’Or awards, and consistently delivers at club and international level, then the conversation will become far more interesting. But football is filled with players whose careers promised everything before injuries, loss of form, changing teams, or changing circumstances altered the script.

Potential is not legacy. A spectacular beginning is not the same as a completed masterpiece.

The excitement surrounding Lamine is understandable, but crowning him the GOAT today would be unfair not only to Messi but also to Lamine himself. It places impossible expectations on a player whose story is still being written.

The truth is simple. Winning the World Cup strengthens Lamine Yamal’s case as the brightest young footballer in the world and perhaps the future face of football. It does not erase everything Lionel Messi achieved over almost twenty years. Until someone matches or surpasses Messi’s complete body of work, his consistency, longevity, individual brilliance, team success, and influence on the game, the Argentine legend remains the standard by which every footballer is measured.

Lamine Yamal may one day sit on that throne.

But today, the crown still belongs to Lionel Messi.
