Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Leads Nigeria’s Digital Democracy with Historic 2025/2026 E-Voting Student Union Elections

Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, has once again set a remarkable pace in digital democracy by successfully conducting the 2025/2026 Student Union Government (SUG) elections entirely through a fully electronic voting system, the second consecutive year the institution has adopted e-voting.

The landmark exercise, which has been hailed as a model for transparency and innovation in student leadership contests, allowed students to cast their votes remotely from any part of the world. This was made possible by the Polytechnic’s robust digital infrastructure, carefully designed to guarantee accessibility, transparency, and integrity throughout the process.

Supervised by the Electoral Committee (ELECO) in partnership with the ICT Unit, the elections were closely monitored by candidates’ agents to prevent malpractice. Despite initial concerns about the alleged misuse of matriculation numbers, management swiftly intervened and reassured the student body of stringent safeguards against electoral fraud.

In his firm warning against misconduct, the Polytechnic’s management emphasized: “We are not training criminals we are training people who will serve society the right way. Any candidate found tampering with the process will be disqualified.”

Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Chinyere Ezeh, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, hailing it as the most credible electoral exercise in the institution’s history. 

“This election has raised the bar for student leadership contest on our campus. The transparency and zeal of our students are truly commendable,” she remarked.

Final results are expected to be announced after a thorough verification process overseen by the Rector, a move aimed at consolidating the credibility of the election. Dr. Ezeh further reiterated that the official announcement of the winners would be announced by the Rector after the verification of the results.

The Polytechnic community and stakeholders have celebrated this development as a major milestone in the institution’s ongoing digital transformation drive and a bold step in nurturing democratic values among students.
