ABIA SHINES IN GLOBAL AND NATIONAL SPORTS SCENE, AS GOVERNOR ALEX OTTI’S VISION ON YOUTH AND SPORTS DEVELOPMENT YIELDS REMARKABLE RESULTS
Abia State is fast emerging as a hub of excellence in youth and sports development, thanks to the visionary leadership of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR. The Commissioner for Information, Prince Sir Okey Kanu, made this known on Monday at Government House, Umuahia, while addressing the press after this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by the Governor.
Prince Kanu proudly stated that, through the Governor’s foresight and commitment to empowering the youth and promoting sports, “Abia State has continued to make waves around the world in youth and sports development.”
Highlighting recent milestones, the Information Commissioner expressed excitement over the successful hosting of two major international sporting events in Umuahia — the Para Badminton International Championships which concluded on Sunday, and the All-African Para Badminton Championship which kicked off on Monday at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.
According to him, “This points to the fact that Abia State is taking its rightful place amongst the comity of states in Nigeria in terms of youth and sports development.”
Prince Kanu further recounted Abia’s outstanding performance at the recently concluded 9th National Youth Games held in Asaba, Delta State, where the state made an impressive mark with a massive contingent.
“At the recently concluded nine youth games that held in Asaba, Delta State, Abia State participated with a very large contingent, the largest so far in the state, a contingent of 415 participants,” he revealed.
He added that Abia finished in sixth position overall, with the state’s football team clinching gold for the second consecutive time.
Continuing, the Commissioner also highlighted Abia’s stellar showing at the National Women’s Volleyball Division 1 League in Abuja, where the state’s team, Excelsior South Volleyball Team, emerged as second place winners with 26 points.
Prince Kanu’s remarks underscored that Governor Otti’s administration is not only reviving sports infrastructure but also nurturing young talents to compete and excel both locally and internationally, a clear reflection of a government that is deliberately investing in the futu
re of its youth.
