Court Grants Bail to Man, Agwu Ukpo in Viral Aba Assault Case, as Hearing Fixed for August 19
A Magistrate Court sitting in Umuahia has granted bail to 37-year-old Agwu Ukpo, who is standing trial over a viral assault incident that sparked widespread public outrage across Abia State.
Ukpo was arraigned on charges bordering on attempted murder, indecent assault and assault. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against him.
The matter was heard in chambers, after which the court admitted the defendant to bail. One of the conditions attached to the bail requires him to produce either the traditional ruler or the President-General of his community as a surety.
The court subsequently adjourned the case to August 19, 2026, for the continuation of proceedings.
The case stems from a widely circulated social media video that allegedly captured the defendant physically assaulting a woman in Aba, triggering condemnation from members of the public and renewed calls for justice.
Following the circulation of the disturbing footage, operatives of the Abia State Police Command’s Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU), led by CSP Emeka Amanchukwu, launched a swift intelligence-driven operation that resulted in the suspect’s arrest in the Ogbor Hill area of Aba on Friday, June 20, 2026.
Security sources disclosed that the operation was carried out after credible intelligence revealed the suspect’s whereabouts. The coordinated operation enabled officers to successfully track and apprehend him without incident.
The arrest was widely applauded by residents and social media users who had demanded urgent action after the video went viral.
The Abia State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that individuals involved in violent crimes would continue to be identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Command also reiterated its zero-tolerance stance against all forms of violence, assuring residents that every report of criminal conduct would receive prompt attention as part of its efforts to maintain law and order across the state.
The arrest and ongoing prosecution underscore the Police Command’s determination to respond swiftly to public concerns and ensure that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought before the courts to answer 
for their actions.
