Police Arrests Enugu Traditional Ruler, Ex-Lawmaker, 8 Others Over Alleged Attack on NDC Meeting
The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a prominent traditional ruler in Enugu State, Igwe Obiora Igwesi, his brother and former federal lawmaker, Hon. Uchenna Sunday A. Igwesi, popularly known as USA Igwesi, alongside eight other suspects over an alleged violent attack on a Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state.
The arrests, which took place on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, followed an order issued by the Inspector-General of Police after a petition was submitted over the alleged disruption of the political gathering.
The suspects were reportedly taken into custody by detectives attached to Zone 13 Command, Ukpo, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, as investigations into the incident got underway.
The police action followed a petition dated September 15, 2026, submitted by Chief G. Tagbo Ike, SAN, on behalf of the NDC Obuoffia Ward and addressed to the Inspector-General of Police at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The petition reportedly drew the attention of the police authorities to the alleged attack on the ward meeting and requested intervention, leading to the subsequent investigation and arrests.
The development has generated attention in Enugu’s political circles, particularly because of the identities of some of those arrested, including the traditional ruler and his former lawmaker brother.
The suspects are expected to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, while further details on the incident and possible charges remain subject to the outcome of the police investigation.
