Abia Hosts Nigeria’s First Ever Manufacturing Technology UniPod as FG, UNDP, TETFund Drive Innovation Revolution
Nigeria recorded a major milestone in its drive towards industrialisation and innovation on Monday with the formal launch of the country’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State.
The landmark initiative is a collaborative project of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and the Abia State Government. The facility is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application by providing a platform where innovation can be transformed into commercially viable products.
Speaking during the inauguration, the Vice President, His Excellency, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, represented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf OlaTunji Alausa, said the establishment of the Manu-Tech UniPod demonstrates the Federal Government’s determination to reposition higher education as a major driver of innovation, entrepreneurship, research commercialisation, and employment generation.
Describing the initiative as a “strategic investment in Nigeria’s future,” the Vice President stressed that Nigerian universities must move beyond their traditional roles of teaching and research to become centres for enterprise development, technology transfer, and industrial competitiveness capable of supporting national economic transformation.
Delivering his keynote address titled “Science Meets Enterprise,” Abia State Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, said the decision to locate Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology UniPod in Abia reflects the confidence the Federal Government and the UNDP have in the state’s capacity to drive regional economic growth and industrial development.
According to the Governor:
“The siting of the Manu-Tech UniPod in Abia speaks eloquently to the institutional faith UNDP and the Federal Government of Nigeria have reposed in our dear State and the potential it holds as an engine of growth and economic prosperity in the region.“
Governor Otti noted that the confidence and commitment demonstrated by the project’s partners are already producing tangible results, describing the commissioning as clear evidence of a productive partnership. He expressed profound appreciation for the decision to establish the pioneering facility in Abia State.
The Governor explained that his administration wholeheartedly supported the UniPod project because it aligns seamlessly with the state’s economic development blueprint, particularly its focus on industrialisation, innovation, entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment.
Highlighting the transformative impact the facility is expected to have on research and innovation, Governor Otti stated:
“With the launch of the UniPod, a new interest in qualitative research will develop as scientists, students and everyone connected to the University ecosystem begin to look beyond random and hurried publication of academic papers just to score points for the next promotion cycle.
“The expectation is that research efforts henceforth will be directed at answering questions with practical, everyday applications,“ Governor Otti stated.
Governor Otti further commended the Federal Government of Nigeria, TETFund, UNDP, and all stakeholders whose collective efforts made the project a reality.
Reflecting on the partnership between Abia State and the development institutions, he said:
“Over the last 3 years, we have found them to be reliable partners which explains our expanding body of joint ventures projects targeting entrepreneurship development, job creation and similar initiatives aimed at opening new layers of economic and social opportunities for our women and young people in particular,“ he said.
Also speaking at the event, the UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, described the commissioning as part of a nationwide innovation ecosystem being established through the UniPod initiative.
She explained that the programme is designed to integrate education, scientific research, innovation, enterprise, and manufacturing, thereby positioning Nigerian universities as engines of economic growth, industrial competitiveness, and global relevance.
Ms. Attafuah applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Federal Ministry of Education, TETFund, and the Abia State Government for their commitment to innovation-driven development. She particularly praised Governor Alex Otti for his vision of transforming Abia into Nigeria’s foremost hub for manufacturing and industrial innovation.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Professor Ursala Akanwa, described the inauguration as a historic milestone in the institution’s journey.
She said the establishment of the Manu-Tech UniPod fulfils the University’s mandate of advancing science, technology, and innovation in support of agriculture, manufacturing, entrepreneurship, and national development.
Professor Akanwa expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of Education, UNDP, TETFund, and the Abia State Government for selecting MOUAU as the host institution for Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology UniPod.
The ceremony attracted top government officials, academics, traditional rulers, development partners, and other stakeholders, including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, PhD; members of the State Executive Council, political appointees and traditional rulers.
The newly commissioned Manu-Tech UniPod is expected to provide students, researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs with access to advanced manufacturing technologies, modern prototyping facilities, technical support, and industry mentorship, enabling them to transform research findings and innovative ideas into market-ready products while strengthening Nigeria’
s manufacturing and innovation ecosystem.
