NIMENA Opens Research Call for Blue Economy, Offshore Engineering Journals
The Nigerian Institute of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects (NIMENA) has opened a fresh call for research papers for upcoming editions of two of its academic publications, signalling a stronger push to deepen research, innovation and knowledge development across Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy sectors.
The publications, the Journal of Blue Economy and Sustainable Energy Development (JBESED) and the African Journal of Offshore, Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture (AJOMENA), are expected to provide researchers, academics and industry professionals with platforms to publish studies capable of shaping the future of Nigeria’s maritime and energy industries.
JBESED Targets Blue Economy and Sustainable Energy Research:-
JBESED is inviting scholarly submissions covering a wide range of subjects connected to the blue economy and sustainable energy development.
Among its priority areas are blue economy governance, including ocean policy, marine spatial planning and coastal zone management. The journal is also seeking research on offshore renewable energy, particularly wind, wave and tidal energy systems, as well as technological transitions within the sector.
Other areas of interest include sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, with emphasis on resource management and ecosystem resilience, and marine environmental protection, covering pollution control, habitat restoration and climate adaptation.
The focus reflects the growing importance of sustainable utilisation of Nigeria’s vast marine resources while balancing economic development with environmental protection.
AJOMENA Focuses on Offshore and Marine Engineering:-
The second publication, AJOMENA, is targeting academic and technical contributions in offshore engineering, marine engineering and naval architecture.
Its priority areas include naval architecture, particularly ship design, hydrodynamics and stability; offshore engineering, covering subsea structures, floating production storage and offloading units (FPSOs) and renewable energy technologies; and marine engineering, with particular attention to propulsion systems, green technology and decarbonisation.
The journal is also interested in maritime operations, including shipping logistics, safety management and the development of smart ships.
Together, the two publications cover critical areas that are increasingly central to the transformation of Nigeria’s maritime industry, from cleaner energy and modern vessel design to marine environmental sustainability and smarter maritime operations.
Peer-Reviewed and Open Access:-
NIMENA described both publications as peer-reviewed, open-access journals, highlighting fast publication and high visibility among the benefits available to authors.
The initiative is part of the institute’s broader efforts to strengthen professional development and create greater opportunities for research and innovation within Nigeria’s maritime ecosystem.
NIMENA’s renewed emphasis on research also comes as the institute expands its involvement in initiatives aimed at developing entrepreneurship and technological innovation in the maritime and energy sectors.
The institute recently announced the Plug and Play x NIMENA GOAL Accelerator, an initiative designed to support high-potential startups operating in maritime and energy while deepening innovation connections between Nigeria and Singapore.
The academic journals now provide another dimension to that innovation agenda by creating a structured platform for researchers, academics and industry practitioners to document emerging ideas, share technical knowledge and develop solutions to challenges confronting the maritime sector.
NIMENA Announces $500 APC, Waives Fees for Top 20 Papers:-
According to the institute, an Article Processing Charge (APC) of $500 applies to accepted publications.
However, NIMENA announced that the first 20 best-quality publications will be sponsored at no cost, with the institute fully funding their publication.
The selection of the top 20 papers will be based on several criteria, including scientific validity, technical soundness, originality, international collaboration, impact and research integrity.
NIMENA further stated that submitted papers must attain a minimum qualification score of 80 per cent to be considered for publication.
The funding opportunity is expected to encourage high-quality research and attract contributions from scholars and professionals whose work can make meaningful contributions to the development of Nigeria’s maritime, offshore engineering, naval architecture, energy and blue economy sectors.
