Aba North Mayor, Timothy Iheke Assures NYSC of Prompt Completion of Corps Members’ Lodge, Unveils Plans for Recreation Centre
The Executive Chairman of Aba North Local Government Area, Hon. Timothy Kalu Iheke, has assured the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) of the council’s commitment to completing and improving facilities dedicated to the welfare and comfort of corps members serving in the area.
The Mayor gave the assurance on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, when he received the Aba North Local Government Inspector of the NYSC, Mr. Okechukwu Vincent, alongside NYSC liaison officers, during a courtesy visit to his office.
The visit provided an opportunity for the formal introduction of a new liaison officer to the Mayor, while also informing the council leadership of the imminent departure of the outgoing liaison officer.
Welcoming the NYSC officials, Mayor Iheke expressed satisfaction with the ongoing development of the corps members’ lodge, noting that the project was a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to providing decent accommodation and improving the welfare of corps members serving within Aba North.
He acknowledged the role of the Abia State Government under the visionary and compassionate leadership of His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, in supporting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and working environment of corps members across the state.
The Mayor disclosed that although the plumbing works at the lodge had caused some delay, arrangements had been made to resolve the outstanding issues immediately. He explained that following the completion of the plumbing works, cleaning of the premises and installation of curtains, the facility is expected to be ready for occupation this Friday.
He further announced that additional facilities would be provided to make the lodge more secure, comfortable and conducive for corps members.
According to him, plans are already in place for the installation of Closed-Circuit Television cameras (CCTVs) and solar power facilities at the lodge by November 2026.
Beyond accommodation, Mayor Iheke revealed that the council was also working towards establishing a recreation centre for corps members, providing them with opportunities for relaxation and outdoor activities such as table tennis and other recreational engagements.
He emphasized that the initiative was part of a broader commitment by the Aba North administration to ensure that corps members posted to the council are properly received, supported and provided with an environment that enables them to contribute meaningfully to the development of the local government.
Earlier, the Aba North NYSC Local Government Inspector, Mr. Okechukwu Vincent, introduced the new liaison officer to the Mayor and expressed appreciation for the administration’s efforts towards the welfare of corps members.
Mr. Vincent commended the Mayor for the ongoing construction and development of the corps members’ lodge, describing the project as a significant intervention that would help address accommodation challenges faced by some corps members.
He explained that while the lodge was primarily intended for corps members posted to the Aba North Local Government Council, the NYSC also assists corps members who require accommodation, particularly those who do not have alternative places to stay, even when they are not directly posted to the council.
The engagement further underscored the growing collaboration between the Aba North Local Government administration and the NYSC in strengthening the welfare, security and overall experience of corps members serving within the council.
Present at the meeting were the Deputy Mayor, Hon. Christian Chijioke Ogbuisi; the Head of Service of the council; and 
other aides of the Mayor.
