Abia Assembly Moves to Boost Youth and Sports Growth, Adopts Sports Development Fund Report and Advances TET Bill

The Abia State House of Assembly has continued to demonstrate its commitment to youth empowerment and sports advancement in the state, as two key legislative milestones were recorded during Tuesday’s plenary.

At the sitting, the House received and considered the report of the House Committee on Sports and Youth Development on H.A.B. 7: The Abia State Sports Development Fund Bill, 2024. The report, presented by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Emmanuel Ndubuisi (Bende South), was thoroughly reviewed and subsequently adopted by the House as its working document.

The Sports Development Fund Bill seeks to establish a sustainable funding framework to promote grassroots sports, identify and nurture young talents, and support sporting infrastructure across the state. The bill, which is part of the state’s broader effort to revitalize sports and youth engagement, was committed to the Committee of the Whole for further legislative scrutiny and refinement.

In the same plenary, the House also advanced H.A.B. 38: The Abia State Youth Technical and Entrepreneurial Training (TET) Bill, sponsored by Hon. Rowland Chinwendu Dennis (Isiala Ngwa South), as it successfully passed its second reading.

The TET Bill aims to create structured opportunities for technical skill acquisition, entrepreneurial development, and innovation among Abia youths, aligning with the state government’s drive to reduce unemployment and enhance youth productivity.

Lawmakers commended both legislative initiatives, emphasizing that sports development and youth entrepreneurship are key pillars in building a prosperous and self-reliant Abia State. The bills, upon passage, are expected to institutionalize support for youth-driven innovation and sporting excellence, complementing the reforms already championed by the administration of Governor
