Abia State Flags Off 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Activities with Emblem Launch in Umuahia
The Abia State Government has formally launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem, signalling the official commencement of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day across the state.
The emblem launch ceremony took place at the Aguiyi Ironsi Conference Centre, Umuahia, and drew top government functionaries, security agencies, veterans, and other key stakeholders. Speaking on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, the Acting SSG, Dr Emmanuel Meribole, called on Abians and Nigerians at large to continually remember, honour, and celebrate the courage and selfless sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes.
Professor Kalu, in his message, paid glowing tribute to the men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces, whose commitment and patriotism, he noted, have contributed significantly to the sustenance of peace, stability, and national unity. He described the emblem launch as a symbolic reminder of the collective responsibility of citizens to promote peace, unity, and harmonious coexistence in Abia State and the country at large.
He further reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Abia State Government to peace, security, and the welfare of security personnel.
According to him, the government will continue to strengthen collaboration with security agencies, traditional rulers, religious bodies, and community leaders to enhance security and foster unity across all parts of the state.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Godwin Okezuo, explained that the event was organized to rekindle national consciousness on the bravery, dedication, and ultimate sacrifices of officers and men who defended the territorial integrity of Nigeria. He urged all stakeholders, institutions, and members of the public to actively support the remembrance activities.
Dr Okezuo noted that the launch of the Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem officially ushers in the series of activities lined up for the 2026 commemoration. He described the emblem as a powerful symbol of honour, sacrifice, and patriotism, representing the price paid by fallen heroes in the service of the nation.
In a vote of thanks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander Macdonald Uba (Rtd), stated that the emblem launch marks the beginning of several programmes scheduled for the remembrance celebrations. He expressed appreciation to all individuals and organizations whose efforts contributed to the successful hosting of the event.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Abia State, Lt. Colonel Stanley Odionyenfe, represented by the Vice Chairman, Chief Okereke Samuel, appealed to citizens, corporate bodies, and institutions to lend their support to the programme as a mark of respect for the sacrifices of fallen and living heroes.
