ABIA STATE GOVERNMENT APPROVES IMPLEMENTATION OF CONSOLIDATED HEALTH SALARY STRUCTURE (CONHESS) FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT HEALTH WORKERS

In a significant move aimed at enhancing the welfare of health workers at the grassroots level, the Abia State Government (ABSG) has approved the implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for Local Government workers across the state.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at the Government House, Umuahia, following the conclusion of this week’s State Executive Council (SEC) meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR.

According to the Commissioner, the approval of the CONHESS is part of the ongoing reforms in the state civil service designed to ensure fairness, equity, and improved conditions of service for the state’s workforce.

“The state government continues to prioritise workers’ welfare and conditions of service of its workforce. This commendable move makes Abia State one of the few states in the country that pays the Federal Government’s Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) to its workers,” he stated.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, noted that the government had to first verify the exact number of health workers in the Local Government Areas before granting approval for the new salary structure. He emphasized that the implementation of CONHESS has effectively eliminated the long-standing disparity in salary payments among healthcare workers at the local government level.

“If this is anything to boost the morale of workers, His Excellency has done it,” Prof. Uche stated, commending Governor Otti’s administration for its unwavering commitment to equity and staff motivation.
