After Two Decades in Darkness, Jubilation Erupts in Umuola as Aba Power Restores Electricity to Igbo Community in Etche LGA, Rivers State
Wild celebrations have broken out in Umuola community in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State following the restoration of electricity after 20 years of total blackout.
In a trending viral video circulating across social media platforms, residents were seen singing, dancing, and expressing overwhelming joy as power was officially restored to the community through Aba Power. For many households, it marked the first time in two decades that electric bulbs lit up their homes, bringing an end to years of dependence on generators, lanterns, and other costly alternatives.
Community sources revealed that the long-awaited reconnection was made possible following the intervention of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, who gave approval for the abandoned Igbo community to be connected to the Aba power supply network.
Umuola, one of the prominent Igbo communities in Etche LGA of Rivers State, had reportedly remained without public electricity for over 20 years.
Residents described the development as historic and transformative, noting that the prolonged blackout had severely affected economic activities, small businesses, education, and overall quality of life in the area.
Traders, artisans, and students had struggled under harsh conditions, with many forced to spend heavily on fuel to power generators or operate without electricity entirely.
The restoration of power is expected to stimulate economic growth in the community, enhance security, and improve living standards. Small-scale enterprises such as barbing salons, tailoring shops, cold-room businesses, and phone charging centers are now poised for revival after years of stagnation.
For the people of Umuola, the reconnection goes beyond infrastructure; it symbolizes renewed hope, inclusion, and recognition after years of neglect. The viral footage capturing residents celebrating under newly restored electric light stands as a powerful testament to the impact of access to basic infrastructure on rural communities.
As electricity returns to Umuola after two decades, many residents say the development marks the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with opportunity, growth, and long-awaited progress.
