“…But In Your Case, You Have Done Not Just What You Promised, But Even More.” – Prof. Yemi Osinbajo Says, Applauds Gov. Alex Otti’s People-Centered Governance During Birthday Visit, Describes Abia’s Transformation as Tangible and Purposeful
Former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has applauded Governor Alex Chioma Otti for what he described as purposeful and people-centered leadership that is steadily repositioning Abia State for sustainable growth and shared prosperity.
Prof. Osinbajo made the commendation during a visit to the Governor at his country home on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, a date that coincided with the Governor’s birthday. The former Vice President expressed deep appreciation for the warm reception accorded him and commended the Governor’s performance in office, stressing that the true essence of public service lies in making meaningful differences in the lives of citizens.
“I am extremely proud of the work you have done so far, you have lived up to expectations not only to the people but also to your friends and associates. In the short time I have been here, I have seen tangible evidence of progress,” Prof. Osinbajo stated.
He particularly highlighted Governor Otti’s bold social welfare reforms, including his assent to the Senior Citizens’ Law, describing the initiative as exemplary and deeply rooted in compassion and social responsibility.
According to him, the most successful welfare systems across the world are anchored on genuine care for the vulnerable and elderly, noting that Abia’s model reflects thoughtful and humane governance.
Beyond social welfare, Prof. Osinbajo lauded the extensive road infrastructure renewal and improved connectivity across the state, describing the projects as visible symbols of purposeful and results-driven leadership. He observed that while many aspire to public office, true distinction lies in delivery and measurable impact.
“Sometimes you wonder whether, after all the efforts to get into office, leaders are able to fulfill their promises. But in your case, you have done not just what you promised, but even more. You have made public service worthwhile,” he added.
The former Vice President also offered prayers for renewed strength, wisdom, and divine favour for Governor Otti as he continues the work of rebuilding and transforming Abia State.
In his response, Governor Otti warmly welcomed Prof. Osinbajo, describing him as a brother, friend, and mentor whose visit meant a great deal to him. He clarified that the gathering was not a planned birthday celebration but merely a quiet marking of the day, noting that he rarely celebrates such occasions publicly, particularly while serving in public office.
The Governor expressed gratitude to well-wishers who turned up voluntarily and reiterated his preference for modesty and a continued focus on service delivery.
Reflecting on the administration’s 32 months in office, Governor Otti thanked God for what he described as modest but impactful achievements. He reaffirmed that governance must remain centered on the welfare, safety, and peace of mind of the people.
“Governance is about the people their welfare, their safety, and their peace of mind. If you enter office for any other reason, you miss the essence of leadership,” Gov Otti stated.
He recalled decisive actions taken in the administration’s first month when some local governments were under the control of non-state actors.
According to him, firm intervention restored order and ensured that previously inaccessible communities are now safe and open to residents.
Governor Otti also commended security agencies for their dedication and sacrifices in maintaining peace and stability across the state.
“We are grateful to the men and women who stay awake so that our people can sleep in peace,” he said.
Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, on behalf of the State Executive Council, conveyed warm birthday wishes to the Governor, praying for continued strength and fruitful years ahead.
Representatives of leading financial institutions, including Access Bank, First Bank of Nigeria, and United Bank for Africa, described Governor Otti as a model of credible and ethical leadership at a time when the nation seeks inspiring examples of public service. They noted that his administration has become a benchmark for excellence, demonstrating that visionary leadership can indeed translate into real and measurable change.
The goodwill messages were accompanied by prayers for greater heights, sound health, and divine wisdom as the Governor continues what many observers now describe as a determined and disciplined jour
ney toward building a new Abia.
