FG Reviews Citizenship Applications of 170 Foreign Nationals, as Interior Minister, Tunji-Ojo, Assures Nigerians of Integrity and Due Process

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has disclosed that the Federal Government is currently reviewing the citizenship applications of 170 foreign nationals seeking to become Nigerians.

Tunji-Ojo made the announcement on Monday night via his official account on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the review process is being conducted by the Citizenship Advisory Committee, which is tasked with assessing and recommending qualified applicants for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval.

According to the minister, the committee’s work represents a critical test of the government’s transparency and integrity.

He wrote, “We understand that the exercise is a test of our integrity as leaders and we will ensure to uphold the trust placed on us by the nation.

“Citizenship of the biggest black nation on earth is a valuable asset that requires careful consideration. We hereby assure Nigerians that we will prioritise integrity and proven character above all else.”

Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the Citizenship Advisory Committee is made up of senior officials from key ministries and security agencies, including the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

He noted that the Federal Government remains steadfast in ensuring that only individuals of credible character and integrity are granted Nigerian citizenship, underscoring the national and international significance of such an exercise.

Reaffirming President Tinubu’s commitment to building a nation that values both its global image and internal cohesion, the minister added, “Our government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will continue to do everything to make our beloved country a prosperous nation and a destination of interest for all.”

The ongoing review marks another step in the government’s efforts to strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s citizenship process, ensuring that the honour of becoming a Nigerian remains a privilege earned through merit, trust, and accountability.
