Governor Alex Otti Set to Launch Contributory Pension Scheme for Abia Workers in November 2025

The Abia State Government has announced plans to officially launch a Contributory Pension Scheme for Abia workers in November 2025, as part of its ongoing efforts to reform and strengthen the state’s civil service system.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, on Monday, during a press briefing held at the Government House, Umuahia, shortly after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

According to Prince Kanu, “it is in keeping with the ongoing reforms in the state’s civil service, whereby workers’ welfare is given greater attention.”

The Commissioner highlighted that the Otti-led administration has continued to prioritize the welfare and financial security of Abia workers, noting that, “it is worthy to note that the workers have never had it so good in the state.

“The state government, upon inception, paid off outstanding pension arrears owed to Abia workers by the previous administration.”

He further explained that efforts are underway to address gratuity payments, stating that, “currently, the issue of gratuity is being addressed by a special committee set up by the Governor, and will be paid once the committee concludes its assignment.”

Prince Kanu emphasized that the introduction of the Contributory Pension Scheme will put an end to the long-standing issue of pension debts in the state.

“With the launch of this pension contributory scheme, the ugly issue of owing pension payments and arrears will become a thing of the past,” he said.

He also commended the administration’s consistency in salary and pension disbursements, affirming that “under this administration, workers’ salaries and monthly pension payments are taken for granted, given the fact that workers now receive their salaries and pension payments every 28th day of the month.”

The planned pension scheme launch is widely seen as a bold step towards ensuring sustainable financial security and dignity for retired Abia workers, reinforcing Governor Otti’s reputation for fiscal discipline, transparency, and commitment to workers’ welfare.
