INEC Approves Nationwide Voter Revalidation Exercise, Directs Immediate Preparations Across States
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the conduct of a nationwide voter revalidation exercise as part of efforts to strengthen the credibility of Nigeria’s voter register ahead of future elections.
This directive was conveyed in an official communication issued from the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja and addressed to all Resident Electoral Commissioners across the country.
According to the Commission, the decision follows deliberations at its Induction and Strategic Retreat held in Lagos State in January 2026, where the need to ensure a more credible and reliable voter register was extensively discussed.
The exercise will be conducted through both online platforms and physical registration points at various administrative levels nationwide. These include Local Government Areas (LGAs), Registration Areas (RAs), and Polling Units (PUs), ensuring accessibility for eligible voters across the country.
INEC disclosed that two Voter Enrollment Devices will be deployed at each LGA, while one device will be stationed at both the Registration Area and Polling Unit levels. To facilitate smooth operations, the Commission will deploy its staff alongside members of the National Youth Service Corps, with two personnel assigned to each enrollment device.
Resident Electoral Commissioners have been directed to commence immediate preparations for the exercise. This includes mobilising personnel and ensuring the readiness and functionality of the voter enrollment devices required for the exercise.
The Commission also indicated that a detailed timeline for the exercise has been provided to guide the planning and implementation process nationwide.
The nationwide voter revalidation exercise is expected to play a critical role in improving the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system by updating voter information and enhancing the accuracy of the electoral register.
