POWERING PROGRESS: ABIA GOVERNMENT ADVANCES GRID EXTENSION, RESTORES ELECTRICITY IN UKWA EAST AND AROCHUKWU, INSTALLS OVER 8,000 SOLAR STREETLIGHTS ACROSS 147 COMMUNITIES
The Abia State Government has intensified efforts to strengthen power supply and public utilities across the state, recording significant milestones in its grid extension and energy restoration initiatives, particularly in Ukwa East and Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area.
Briefing journalists on Tuesday after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Chioma Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, outlined the steady progress being made in delivering reliable electricity to previously underserved communities.
He revealed that comprehensive power needs assessments have been successfully completed across communities in Ukwa East, a critical step towards ensuring targeted and sustainable electrification interventions. This development, according to him, positions the government to deploy resources more efficiently in addressing longstanding power challenges in the area.
In Arochukwu axis, the Commissioner disclosed that rehabilitation works on key power infrastructure spanning from Amuvi to Arochukwu, terminating at the strategic Omenuko Bridge, have been fully completed. The restoration of this line is expected to significantly improve electricity supply to surrounding communities, boosting economic activities and enhancing quality of life for residents.
Providing further insight into the state’s broader energy agenda, Prince Kanu highlighted the remarkable achievements recorded under the Light Up Abia initiative. He noted that the government has procured a total of 8,631 solar-powered streetlights, out of which 8,457 have already been installed across 147 communities statewide.
The large-scale deployment of solar street lighting, he explained, is part of the administration’s commitment to improving public safety, extending commercial activities into nighttime hours, and promoting clean energy solutions across Abia.
The latest developments underscore the Otti administration’s strategic focus on infrastructure renewal and its determination to bridge the energy gap in both urban and rural communities, positioning Abia as a state on the path to sustainable growth and modern public utility
services.
