ABIA STATE GOVT ACCELERATES STATEWIDE ROAD DEVELOPMENT AS 52 DIRECT LABOUR PROJECTS PROGRESSES AND NEW STRATEGIC ROUTES ARE ADDED
The Abia State Government has intensified its drive to transform road infrastructure across the state, with ongoing construction and maintenance works now spanning multiple communities in a coordinated push to improve connectivity and ease transportation.
Providing an update on the sector, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, revealed that direct labour road works are currently ongoing at no fewer than 52 locations across the state. The widespread intervention underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing critical road needs through both rapid-response maintenance and structured development efforts.
Prince Kanu made this known on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Chioma Otti. He noted that the scale and pace of the projects reflect the government’s deliberate strategy to ensure that road infrastructure keeps up with the state’s growing economic and social demands.
In addition to the direct labour interventions, the Commissioner disclosed that 29 road projects awarded to contractors are actively ongoing across various parts of the state, further reinforcing the administration’s multi-pronged approach to infrastructure renewal.
He also highlighted recently completed projects under the direct labour initiative, including a 540-metre road at Mater Dei Cathedral and a 214-metre emergency maintenance work in Isieketa, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area. These completed efforts, he said, have already begun to ease movement and improve access within the affected areas.
Expanding the scope of ongoing interventions, the government has also added new projects to its maintenance portfolio. Among them are the construction of drainage systems along Awomukwu-Umuosoko Road in Ikwuano and the development of a 265-metre stretch of Ubu Avenue in the Ehimiri Housing Estate, Umuahia. These additions are aimed at addressing both road durability and flood control challenges, ensuring longer-lasting infrastructure outcomes.
