Russia-Ukraine War: US cautioned ahead of final peace deal
The final version of the United States’ 28-point peace plan to end the Russia-Ukraine war should not hand Moscow a diplomatic victory, says Yuriy Boyechko, Hope For Ukraine CEO.
The humanitarian reacted to this week’s high-level dialogue in Geneva, where United States and Ukraine officials brainstormed on an updated and refined peace framework.
Highlighting how the initial proposal was widely viewed as a blueprint for Ukrainian “capitulation,” he said recent U.S. diplomatic actions and comments have given Moscow “invaluable political intelligence.”
Boyechko cautioned the Trump administration against declaring a quick foreign policy win, even at the cost of undermining Kyiv’s sovereignty and alienating European partners.
The critic stressed that the perception that the American leadership supports a pro-Kremlin plan strengthens President Vladimir Putin’s negotiating position as talks enter the last phase.
“Putin’s strategy has been simple: let the U.S. propose a deal that contains Russian red lines, then stand on the sidelines, cautiously welcoming the plan, while watching Washington absorb the backlash,” he noted.
According to Boyecho, the maneuver reinforces Russia’s narrative that the West is fracturing and may be willing to trade Ukrainian interests for peace.
“The damage lies not in the text of a document, but in the American side’s political calculations, giving Putin confidence that he can outmaneuver the U.S. diplomatic team in the next phase of negotiations,” he added.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has reportedly agreed to the peace deal brokered, although certain areas of disagreement are being worked on to reach a common understanding.
In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced that the original 28-point peace plan has been fine-tuned, with additional input from both sides.
Trump has directed Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to discuss with President Putin in Moscow, while the Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will be meeting with Ukrainian officials in Kyiv.
The U.S. leader, however, indicated that his next physical contact with Putin and Zelensky will be “when the deal to end this war is final or in its final stages.”
