Silent Agricultural Revolution in Abia as Governor Otti’s Empowerment Programme Transforms Farmers into Agro-Entrepreneurs

Abia State is quietly experiencing an agricultural revolution under the leadership of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, as his administration’s investment in mechanized farming, value-chain development, and youth empowerment begins to yield tangible results across the state.

Last year, in line with his commitment to diversify the state’s economy and guarantee food security, Governor Otti sponsored 300 Abians to CSS Integrated Farms in Nasarawa State. The trainees were exposed to modern mechanized farming techniques and the agricultural value chain. Upon completion, the state government empowered them with interest-free loans to kick-start their agribusiness ventures.

Today, their inspiring success stories are emerging, demonstrating how public funds are being used for grassroots empowerment and long-term economic transformation.

One such success is Mr. Victor Mbaegbu, a piggery farmer who grew his capacity from less than 500 pigs to over 800 within a year. Similarly, Mr. Basil Emenike, a rice farmer, has expanded into large-scale cultivation of watermelon, cucumber, and potatoes, while also training other farmers in his community.

Mr. Franklin Egbu, trained in agricultural value addition, is now processing beans into beans flour, soybeans into powder, and plantains into flour. His products are stocked in supermarkets in Umuahia and are already being distributed to major cities like Abuja and Lagos.

For Mrs. Ijeoma Daniel Nwachukwu, the story is one of resilience and gratitude. Empowered to venture into fish farming, she has successfully completed her first production cycle and begun her second, with plans to expand through partnerships and investors.

In Osisioma LGA, Mr. Ugorji Nnaemeka Nelson proudly stands as the only mushroom farmer in the area, thanks to the state’s support. Not only is he meeting the rising demand for mushrooms, but he is also training others to venture into the field.

Other young beneficiaries like Mr. Elijah A. Kalu and Ms. Chioma Onyekachi are thriving in open-field farming, cultivating cassava, plantain, melon, and pumpkin. Their testimonies underscore the administration’s determination to achieve food sufficiency and reduce dependence on external food supplies.

Governor Otti’s strategy is not just about farming but about building sustainable agro-businesses that create jobs, empower communities, and attract private investment. By focusing on value addition, innovation, and empowerment, the administration is laying a foundation for an agric-driven economy in Abia State.
