Aba North Council Chairman, Hon. Timothy Iheke Receives FRSC Delegation, Announces Plans for Official Operational Base and Future Number Plate Production Centre
The Executive Chairman of Aba North Local Government Area, Hon. Timothy Kalu Iheke, on Tuesday welcomed officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to his office at the Aba North council headquarters, where critical discussions were held on strengthening road safety, traffic management, and collaborative security efforts across within the Local Government Area.
During the courtesy visit, Hon. Iheke expressed appreciation for the presence and partnership of the Corps, acknowledging their efforts despite operating under less-than-ideal conditions. He assured them that plans have already been approved to provide a fully conducive, official operational structure for the FRSC within the local government council headquarters.
According to him, construction arrangements are underway, and the facility, when completed, will not only enhance the Corps’ efficiency but also serve as a strategic revenue-generating asset for the council.
Hon. Iheke further revealed aspirations to establish a functional sub-plant for the production of vehicle number plates and driver’s licences within Aba North, describing it as a long-term infrastructural and economic development objective. He emphasized that such a facility would significantly curb security challenges linked to criminals who hide under fake government plate numbers to carry out kidnapping and other illegal activities.
The chairman also urged the officers to remain diligent, proactive, and professionally committed, assuring them of the council’s full support whenever required.
Speaking earlier, the newly deployed Commander of the Ogbor Hill Unit Command, who also serves as the Chief Route Commander, Mrs. S. O. Ngwakwe, expressed gratitude for the warm reception from the council chairman. She clarified that although they are currently operating through the Aba North workstation, the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, through the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), has already approved and initiated renovation work for their previously affected unit command facility. She explained that the visit was also to formally introduce her leadership team, build strategic alignment with the council, and reinforce collaborations on traffic control, public order, and smooth processing of driver’s licences.
Also contributing, the Superintendent Route Commander for Aba North, Mr. Ochu Anthony, provided insights into ongoing FRSC efforts to clamp down on the circulation of fake government number plates used for criminal activities. He highlighted the need for Abia State to acquire approval to produce number plates locally, which would save residents the stress and cost of travelling to Abuja for processing. He reaffirmed that the FRSC remains committed to supporting the council in traffic regulation, crowd management, and improved licensing services, noting that the Ogbor Hill Unit Command covers Aba North, Aba South, and Obingwa LGAs.
The high-level engagement marks a significant step toward strengthened partnership between the Aba North Local Government and the Federal Road Safety Corps, with shared commitments toward improved public safety, administrative innovation, and socio-economic development wi
thin the area.
