Edo Assembly Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku Resigns Amid Impeachment Moves
The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from his position, throwing the state legislature into a fresh leadership crisis.
Agbebaku’s resignation was announced on Monday, August 17, 2026, amid reported moves by some lawmakers to remove him from office through impeachment.
The development came as a major political shake-up within the Edo State House of Assembly, with attention now shifting to the next steps by lawmakers and the emergence of a new presiding officer.
Agbebaku’s decision to relinquish the position was confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, in a statement posted on Facebook. She indicated that more information concerning the circumstances surrounding the resignation would be made available later.
“EDO ASSEMBLY SPEAKER RT HON CHIEF BLESSING AGBEBAKU RESIGNS,” she wrote.
Although the immediate reasons behind the Speaker’s resignation were not fully disclosed, his exit followed growing moves within the Assembly to impeach him, raising fresh questions about the political dynamics among lawmakers.
The resignation means the Assembly will now have to begin the process of filling the vacant Speakership position at a time when the legislature is already facing heightened political attention.
The coming days are therefore expected to be crucial, as lawmakers deliberate on who will take over the leadership of the House and whether the development will lead to further changes within its leadership structure.
Agbebaku’s exit also adds another layer to the unfolding political developments in Edo State, with stakeholders expected to closely monitor the reactions of lawmakers, political parties and other key actors to the sudden change in leadership.
For now, the Edo State House of Assembly is faced with the immediate task of restoring stability and selecting a new Speaker to steer its affairs.
