Prophet Odumeje Turns Church into ‘Afrika Shrine’ as He Channels Fela Kuti in Fiery Anti-Corruption Rendition
The famed Nigerian clergyman and founder of The Mountain of Holy Spirit Church in Onitsha, Anambra State, Prophet Chukwuemeka Cyril Odumeje, has taken the internet by storm once again, this time for transforming his church auditorium into a scene reminiscent of the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s Afrika Shrine.
In a trending video circulating online, the pastor, popularly called Odumeje, electrified his congregation with a spirited performance of Fela’s iconic Afrobeat track “Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am,” popularly known as “Palava.”
His rendition didn’t only mimic the style of the late music icon but also reflected the same boldness for which Fela was known: confronting bad governance.
During the unusual service session, Odumeje narrated how Fela’s music became a weapon against corruption and oppressive leadership. He recalled how the Afrobeat pioneer constantly challenged Nigeria’s political system and paid heavily for his activism, yet refused to be silenced. The atmosphere then shifted into a dramatic, high-energy performance as the prophet began singing his remix of the 1972 classic, infusing it with strong political messages directed at leaders who exploit national resources.
As his voice roared through the microphone, church members erupted in excitement, dancing, clapping, and vibing to the beat like a live concert. The vibrant ambience mirrored the musical rebellion of Fela’s shrine, only this time, within a church setting led by a prophet.
Prophet Odumeje, widely known for his unorthodox style of ministry characterized by dramatic deliverance sessions, acrobatic gestures, and loud proclamations, showcased yet another side of his personality, revealing his flair for entertainment and music. His unconventional manner has made him one of Nigeria’s most talked-about religious figures, earning him nicknames such as “The Lion of God.”
The latest viral performance adds to the list of moments that have cemented Odumeje as a social media sensation. Whether for miracles, comedic statements, or now, Fela-style activism in church, the Onitsha prophet continues to blend spirituality, drama, and showmanship in a way that keeps Nigeria watching and talking.
