Fresh intrigue and uncertainty have gripped the Middle East as speculation intensifies over the fate of Iranian military commander Esmail Qaani, one of the most powerful figures within Iran’s security establishment, following the devastating air strike that reportedly killed Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
The mystery surrounding the brigadier general of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has fueled a wave of rumours across regional media and social platforms, with unverified claims suggesting he may have been placed under house arrest, interrogated, or even executed amid allegations that he might have been acting as an Israeli spy.
Gen. Qaani has increasingly drawn attention over the last two years due to what observers describe as a pattern of surviving deadly attacks that killed many of those around him. Reports claim he emerged unharmed from the initial air strike that triggered the latest war, an attack that allegedly killed Khamenei along with several top aides and security officials.
The unusual circumstances have intensified suspicions and conspiracy theories, particularly within regional political circles, where speculation about internal betrayal and foreign infiltration has become widespread.
As commander of the elite Quds Force, one of the five branches of the IRGC, the 68-year-old military figure has overseen Iran’s external military operations since 2020, including the training and equipping of allied revolutionary groups across the Middle East.
He assumed the powerful role following the assassination of Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike ordered by former American president Donald Trump during the final weeks of Trump’s first administration.
Recent reports have pointed to what they describe as a recurring pattern in which Gen. Qaani appeared to escape dangerous situations that proved fatal for other senior Iranian officials.
One report noted that the general had “spent the past two years accumulating a reputation for his extraordinary ability to walk away unscathed while everyone around him dies.”
One notable episode occurred during Israel’s reported 12-day war with Iran in June, when a series of targeted strikes reportedly eliminated several top IRGC commanders. At the time, Gen. Qaani was initially believed to have been killed. However, he later appeared at a public gathering dressed in civilian clothing and wearing a baseball cap, surprising observers and reigniting speculation about his whereabouts during the strikes.
The incident mirrored a similar situation that reportedly took place in October 2024, further adding to the mystique surrounding his repeated survival.
Fueling the rumours further were claims that Israeli authorities had circulated a list of Iranian and Iran-linked officials targeted for elimination during the latest phase of hostilities. According to reports, that list was declared “complete” over the weekend that marked the start of the war, yet Gen. Qaani’s name was reportedly absent.
In an unusual twist, a Persian-language account on X believed to be associated with Israel’s intelligence service, the Mossad, reportedly denied last year that Qaani was working as one of its agents.
Despite that denial, social media platforms have since been flooded with unverified posts alleging that the general had secretly been a long-term Israeli asset. Some posts went as far as circulating manipulated images placing his face on uniforms belonging to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Additional claims circulating online suggest that Gen. Qaani may currently be under interrogation by the internal security branch of the IRGC, although no official confirmation has been issued by Iranian authorities.
Amid the swirl of speculation, intelligence sources say the truth may be far less dramatic.
One Israeli source with intelligence experience stated: “Ultimately, no one knows.
“Perhaps the truth is that he is what he claims to be, loyal to the Iranian regime, and all this chatter is part of an operation to undermine him and the work he does attacking Israel.”
The controversy comes against the backdrop of what analysts describe as an unprecedented level of Israeli intelligence penetration into Iran’s security system.
Emerging details suggest that the assassination of Khamenei may have involved sophisticated intelligence operations, including reports that Israeli operatives hacked traffic camera networks in Tehran to track movements before the strike.
The Mossad was also reportedly active inside Iran during the June conflict, assisting in the destruction of anti-aircraft systems ahead of Israeli air operations.
While it remains unclear whether Israeli agents were physically present in Iran ahead of the current conflict, former intelligence operatives have previously revealed that the Mossad has significantly expanded its digital intelligence capabilities, allowing it to obtain sensitive information from within Iran.
These operations reportedly include persuading ordinary Iranians to unknowingly pass along valuable data that eventually reaches Israeli intelligence.
Within the IRGC itself, Gen. Qaani is widely regarded as a more reserved and less charismatic figure compared with his predecessor Soleimani, who was seen as a transformative strategist in Iran’s regional military campaigns.
Nevertheless, the veteran commander who served during the Iran‑Iraq War has long been considered a loyal operative of the Iranian regime, bringing decades of battlefield and intelligence experience to Iran’s network of regional allies.
