…as Information Commissioner, Prince Okey Kanu Confirms Over 87 Active Road Construction Sites Across the State
The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to infrastructural development, particularly in the area of road construction and rehabilitation, as the rainy season gradually comes to an end. This assurance was given by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at Government House, Umuahia, on Monday, shortly after the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting presided over by Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR.
According to the Commissioner, as the rains begin to subside, the tempo of construction activities across the state is expected to intensify significantly. He disclosed that work is currently ongoing on 32 contract road project sites across various parts of Abia State, in addition to 55 other roads being handled through direct labour.
Prince Kanu further revealed that the state’s Zero Pothole Initiative remains fully active, ensuring that internal roads and key connecting routes remain motorable at all times. Within the period under review, the Ministry of Works successfully completed 12 direct-labour road projects, including the construction of St. Michael’s Drive at Government Layout, Ehimiri; Hon. Justice Okoroafor Close; Ozouma Spur through Corpers Lodge off Aba Road, Afara; as well as the maintenance of the 8km Umunkpeyi–Eziala-Umuru Nvosi Road in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
In further demonstration of the government’s commitment to transforming Aba into a modern commercial hub, the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) has also commenced the construction of two major roads by contract i.e. the Aba Ring Road from Umuaduru to Okpulor Umuobu, and the 7Up–Okpulor Umuobu Road.
Additionally, GADA has embarked on the construction of six other roads through direct labour. These include Elizabeth Avenue, Imo Avenue, Sacred Heart Street, Ihuoma Street, Afor Ule to Okpulor Umuobu Road, and Ozuomba Road.
The Commissioner reaffirmed that the ongoing massive road construction and rehabilitation projects reflect Governor Alex Otti’s unwavering resolve to open up all parts of the state for economic development, ease transportation, and improve the quality of life of Abians.
